Glass vs Aluminium Pool Fencing

Glass vs Aluminium Pool Fencing

Have you installed a new pool but still need a new pool fence? While having a new pool is an exciting prospect, choosing fencing can be difficult when there are so many options.

Glass pool fencing and aluminium pool fencing are two of the most common pool fencing types, and there are pros and cons to each. But, ultimately, the end result should be a pool area that is safe, that complies with your state’s pool fencing regulations, and that fits your specific needs and tastes.

Consider your needs first

The first step in deciding on a pool fence is defining your needs. Is this pool for the entire family? If so, safety needs to be a primary factor, especially if you have young children.

Regardless of which fence you choose to install it needs to meet safety requirements and adhere to the pool fencing rules specific to your state. Inadequate pool fencing is a major contributing factor to pool drownings, and so it’s essential that all care is taken regarding your fencing.
Another thing you need to consider is the overall look you’re aiming for. Is your pool large or compact? Factoring in the size of your pool and pool area can help you to determine which style of fencing would best suit. Smaller pools can benefit from glass fencing as it helps to make the area appear bigger, while larger pools work well with both glass and aluminium designs. It comes down to personal preference, practicality, and also your budget. And remember, adding a more stylish fence to your pool will add value to your property.

Pros & cons of glass pool fencing

Glass pool fences add a greater level of style and sophistication, and may be the preferred option if you're wanting a more modern looking pool area. Glass is quickly becoming one of the most widely used pool fencing materials, and for good reason.

Here are a few of the pros of glass pool fencing:

  • Great option for families. Glass pool fencing offers high visibility, making it a safer option for homes with children and pets. Glass fences are built to provide 100% visibility so that anyone can supervise from inside or outside the pool.
  • Low maintenance. Glass is very easy to clean and maintain – all you need is soap and water to get rid of any dirt or marks, making pool maintenance a breeze.
  • Enhances the look of your yard. Glass pool fencing is sleek and modern, and can add a pleasing element to your home. It is especially great for feature pools or backyards with extended views.
  • Durable. Glass pool fencing is made of toughened safety glass that meets Australian safety standards, and is strong and durable against all weather conditions.

While glass pool fences are a popular and stylish choice, there are a couple of considerations to keep in mind:

  • May be the more expensive option. Glass pool fencing can be an expensive alternative to an aluminium fence, however you are likely to at most be paying twice the cost when installing a glass pool fence compared to traditional fencing.
  • Glass can scratch. Even though glass pool fences are made of toughened glass, they can still be prone to damage and scratching. This generally only happens when the fence isn’t maintained properly.

Pros & cons of aluminium pool fencing

Aluminium pool fencing is an affordable and durable option if you’re on a budget.

Here are some of the pros of aluminium pool fences:

  • Affordable. The best benefit of aluminium pool fencing is the price. It is generally cheaper than other fencing options.
  • Easy to maintain. Since aluminium doesn’t rust, it doesn’t require much protection or maintenance. Most aluminium fencing is powder coated which makes it durable and fade resistant.
  • Long-lasting. Because there’s almost no need for maintenance, aluminium fencing doesn’t cost much in the long-term and tends to last longer than other types of pool fences.

While aluminium pool fencing has its pros, there are a few disadvantages that you should consider before taking the plunge. These include:

  • Requires frequent cleaning. Aluminium pool fences can collect dust and dirt, even spider webs between posts. For this reason, they do require frequent cleaning with warm soapy water.
  • It will definitely rust overtime due to salt water corrosion, and the powdercoat will certainly fade overtime.
  • Poor visibility of pool area. Unlike glass fencing, which is completely see-through, aluminium fencing can make it harder to supervise children from afar.
  • Isn’t the most secure material. Aluminium isn’t as durable against strong forces as other materials, like toughened glass, and it can be prone to bending.

Which one is best for you?

There are pros and cons when it comes to all types of pool fencing. It’s impossible to say that either aluminium or glass is better than the other for you, since it really comes down to personal preference and needs. However, the safety aspect present with glass fencing should be considered a significant factor when making your decision.
