Innovative Ideas for Designing a Beautiful Glass Balustrade

Innovative Ideas for Designing a Beautiful Glass Balustrade

When one thinks of the words ‘glass balustrade’, it’s easy to conjure one simple image – glass panels going up a flight of stairs, around a deck or at the edge of a balcony. However, there’s so much more you can do with your balustrade to make the design both interesting and unique.

Frameless

Classic and timeless, frameless glass balustrades provide safety for staircases, decks and balconies while actually creating space. Using frameless balustrades alludes to a larger space than what is actually present, because there’s nothing for the eyes to fixate on that will break up the room. They also allow light to seep through the area. For stairs, an interesting way to do this would be to use an entire glass wall or vertical banners. These aren’t necessarily traditional, but they sure are unique.

Contemporary frame

Having a little bit of framing can actually add a lot of character. Depending on the style of your home, popping some black wrought iron framing around the glass can be a funky, contemporary look. You can even create patterns with the framing to produce a point of difference. Don’t want black? What about gold? This is a totally trendy colour and one that will definitely make your balustrade stand out from the crowd.

Timber frame

A more traditional take on the glass balustrade, using timber as the frame and accents creates a more textured look. Using timber can also soften the look. Also, don’t think you have to go fully traditional, just because you’re using timber. There are loads of ways you can make the balustrade interesting. Whether it’s choosing unique timber colours, playing with the angles of the framing or even alternating paneling between the glass and the timber - it’s really a personal choice.

Patterned glass

Have you ever considered using patterned glass to create a truly unique and one-of-a-kind balustrade? Sure, you can go for frameless, semi-framed or fully-framed glass panels, but you can also pop some detail on the glass itself by way of patterns or even decals to make your balustrade really pop. We’re thinking frosted, ribbed or even glass with swirls throughout it. If you don’t want to fully commit to a patterned glass, perhaps you can utilise some decals that can be removed down the track.

It’s all in the details

If you’re keen to find a balance between traditional and unique, utilising the intricate details could be the way to go. Whether it’s playing with the lines of the glass or framing, using light to create shadows or using paneling or patterns to create that extra edge, there are plenty of ways you can spruce up your balustrade so that it’s not just a boring piece of glass.

Things to consider

Of course, designing a balustrade is not simply a matter of choosing some glass, agreeing on the framing and deciding whether to implement patterns (or not). It’s also about considering the safety, cost and how it will blend in with the rest of your home.

  • Safety – There is a code that all balustrades must follow in terms of height, width, depth and the type of materials. Always check whether your choices abide by the code before you get started.
  • Lighting and colour – If you’re thinking of making your balustrade a feature of your home, paint it in its best light. This means installing the right kind of lighting to really make it pop. Do you want the staircase to be bright, vibrant and open or do you want it to feel moody? Whether it’s floor lights or wall lights, these elements can really help make a feature of your staircase.
  • Budget – It’s all well and good to figure out your dream balustrade, but if it’s not within budget, you may as well say “see you later” before you even begin. Designing and constructing a specialised piece from scratch can be pricey, so if you’re set on the idea of creating a feature of your stairs, look at where you can cut costs elsewhere.
  • Does it suit your home? – Again, you can decide on patterns, colours and materials all you like, but the point of a balustrade (even if you’re making a feature of it) is that it suits your home and your personality. Will your chosen design fit in with the rest of your home or will it stick out like a sore thumb? If you have a super traditional home, going uber contemporary with your balustrade probably won’t work.

Designing a beautiful balustrade for your home

Taking some creative risks is a wonderful way to create a really unique and interesting space in your home. Often, it’s the stairs, decks and balconies that get forgotten. So why not make a feature of them? Shine the spotlight on your balustrades by creating unique designs. We can assure you, they’ll very soon be a big talking point with visitors.
